Frequently Asked Questions
I want to develop a travel plan, where do I start?
It depends on the size of your workplace. For small workplaces (defined for the purposes of TravelWise as one with less than 50 people) we will be developing a Self Managed process that could help plan and deliver a travel plan.
A pilot study is currently being undertaken with the Sustainable Business Network (SBN) to assess the needs of small businesses and to consider the potential for small workplaces to self manage the travel plan process.

What is a travel plan?
A travel plan provides solutions to transport issues within each workplace, and a process with which to make them happen. It is an opportunity to increase travel choice for the journey to work and to more effectively manage business travel and freight.
What are some of the solutions or initiatives I can deliver to our workplace?
Typical travel planning activities and actions are:
 | | Car parking management
 | | Secure cycle facilities
 | | Showers and lockers for walkers, joggers and cyclists
 | | Communication and promotion (e.g. passenger transport clinics)
 | | Carpooling
 | | Incentives
 | | Fleet bikes and bus passes for business travel
 | | Flexible working arrangements
 | | Staff subsidies for passenger transport |
Is a travel plan right for my workplace?
A travel plan is right for any workplace because it can
 | | Reduce the number of vehicles going to your workplace
 | | Increase accessibility through more travel options
 | | Save on car parking
 | | Improve staff productivity
 | | Deliver benefits to staff
 | | Provide community and environmental benefits
 | | Improve company image
How do I know my workplace needs a travel plan?
There are many issues each workplace faces when dealing with transport. If one of the problems below applies to your workplace, there’s the opportunity to be the first to develop a travel plan and lead by example:
 | | Not enough car parking
 | | Parking is expensive
 | | Spending time stuck in traffic rather than working
 | | Visitors and customers have difficulties finding your site
 | | Parking overflows onto neighborhood streets
 | | Environmental issues

What is the cost of implementing a travel plan?
It depends on the initiatives you plan for and implement.

Many workplaces manage the travel planning process using existing staff members. However, in some circumstances an organization may choose to bring in external personnel. Outsourcing project management expertise to develop a travel plan can cost between $20,000 and $50,000. Some organizations have budgeted for external consultants to manage the travel plan for particular TravelWise phases where time and management are critical.
What is the time commitment involved?
It depends on the scale of your travel plan. There is a time commitment involved with each TravelWise milestone.
The research and planning phases usually require 10 – 15hrs a week from the travel plan project manager. The research phase requires a significant amount of time to gather information about the existing facilities in your workplace, survey the travel behavior of your staff, and to plan the initiatives you identified as necessary to achieving travel behavior change.
What type of support is available to workplaces?
An ARTA workplace travel plan coordinator will be on hand for advice on whether your travel plan is in line with TravelWise criteria.
Funding for travel plans and other initiatives that focus on changing travel behavior is available from Land Transport NZ to approved organizations (e.g. district and city councils).
What are some quick wins that can be implemented?
While you are starting up your travel plan, you could consider purchasing:
 | | Umbrellas for staff traveling to and from short distance meetings
 | | Towels for walkers, joggers and cyclists
 | | Pedometers
 | | Public transport tickets for business related meetings and so on.
